On Monday, June 1st, 2020, thousands of protesters gathered in Seattle, Washington (and all over the world) to exercise their first amendment right; and peacefully protest racial injustice in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, an African American man who was killed in police custody.

On the front line of this peaceful protest, was a sea of black umbrellas; shielding the protesters not just from the rain — but from the pending danger of being sprayed with pepper-spray by the riot police. And in the midst of the darkness, there it was — the lone pink umbrella.

And then it happened. In the midst of countless voices shouting, “Black lives matter!,” a police officer forcibly attempted to rip the pink umbrella out of the protester’s hands. When the protester didn’t let go of their umbrella, police fired pepper-spray, tear gas and flash bangs into the peaceful protest. All over an umbrella.

The pink umbrella is not just a symbol of protection, it is a symbol of hope. It’s a reminder that in this seemingly dark world, we must always find a way to be the light. There are more beautiful souls in this universe than people who want to see it burn. We just need to remind the world.

We are the Pink Umbrella Gang.
